Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium or zirconia tooth root replacements that stabilize and support prosthetic teeth. The team at Associated Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons may recommend dental implants if you have one or more missing teeth.

While nonsurgical options — like single crowns, bridges, and dentures — are still popular, dental implants give you the unmatched support of natural teeth.

Implants hold your teeth in place just like your natural tooth roots. They allow you to chew and smile with confidence, and they’re more comfortable than traditional methods.

How do dental implants work?

The team at Associated Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons places your implants into your jawbone with a surgical procedure.

Once placed, the implants bond to your jawbone through a process called osseointegration.

The healing process can take 6-12 weeks, as your implants osseointegrate to provide a stable foundation for your teeth.

At their office, the team can accelerate the healing process using growth factors in your blood. First, they draw your blood and run it through a centrifuge before applying it to your jawbone during surgery.

Are there different types of dental implants?

With more than 25 years of experience in dental implant surgery, Associated Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons partners with ZimVie™, Nobel Biocare™, and Straumann® to offer the most comprehensive range of implant options. The two most common dental implant methods are:

Single tooth

Single tooth implants use dental crowns to replace one or more missing teeth, and to close gaps in your smile. Implant-supported crowns are best when you still have several healthy teeth in your mouth.

Traditional single implants require a long-term healing process after surgery, but they may provide more support than faster options if you have low bone density.

All-on-4®

If you have several missing teeth in one or both of your arches, All-on-4 is a quick, cost-effective solution compared with traditional single implants. The process involves placing four strategically placed implants in your upper or lower arch.

The team then connects dentures to your implants during your procedure, so you can leave the office with your new teeth.

All-on-4 may not be the right choice for patients with low bone density. During your initial consultation, the team performs a comprehensive evaluation to determine the best implant approach for you.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer many advantages over temporary methods, such as:

  • Improved appearance
  • Higher level of comfort
  • Easier chewing
  • Enhanced oral hygiene
  • Bone preservation
